Let Your Bible Have No Peers

The Holy Bible is an amazing thing. Not only because it exists, which is amazing, but because it is sufficient for us “to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ”. It is our source of wisdom that moves us on to maturity and wholeness in Christ.

And, not only is it sufficient to provide all we need to live a Godly life, but it is surprisingly… small. The Bible likely feels daunting to us. Daunting at times in its length, and daunting at times in its depth. However, if we set our Bible next to an average college textbook, you may find it to be surprisingly small, and its language surprisingly understandable.

We live in a world inundated with books, articles, and websites, that have endless information and research. But, let not your Bible have any peers. Indeed there are many great books and articles, but let us never forget how breathtakingly unique the Bible is.

There is only one book that has the very Words of God. Only one book that is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The Holy Spirit promises to bring to remembrance the Words of Christ to us, and there is only one book that contains those Words.

God has given us a canon, that contains 66 books of him speaking in history. He has gathered all the gold, and silver and precious jewels into one place. He tells us to seek for wisdom, and he tell us where to look. As we look, we must remember, if there are words, there is a speaker, if there is a story, there is an author. These words aren’t life in it of themselves, but they bring life to us because they bear witness about Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life.

So, I want to encourage you, once again, to pick up your Bible and read it. It might be Friday night, with lots of plans, and you are looking forward to a Saturday with rest. So maybe you make plans to start tomorrow. But, why not start right now? By tomorrow something might change. So maybe the time is now. Before heading off to sleep, grab your Bible, say a quick prayer, and spend 10 minutes listening to God talk. Maybe there isn’t time or energy to dive into deep study, but you can sit and listen to what the living God says. And if nothing else, hear the voice of Jesus say to you now:

“Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
