Remember Jesus
In around 740 BC, the prophet Isaiah foretold of the coming of Jesus and says,
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God … (9:6)
And when Isaiah says that this coming Messiah will be called “Mighty God” he’s saying that he will be God. And therefore what is said of God should be said of him — this Anointed One, this Savior: He is God of gods and Lord of lords. He is great and awesome. He is living and true. He is infinite in being and perfection. He is most holy, most wise, most free, most glorious, most good, and most happy. He has most sovereign dominion over all creatures to do by them, for them, or upon them whatsoever he pleases.
He sees everything, he knows everything, he works everything according to the counsel of his own will, and to him all creatures owe worship, service, obedience, and whatever else he wants.
He is the Mighty God, and so he can say as he does say: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
And as followers of Jesus, we all know this about him … except when we forget. And when we forgot, all we’ve done is taken that description “mighty” and we’ve applied it to something else — so it’s Mighty Circumstance, Mighty Temptation, Mighty Hardship, Mighty Relational Tension, Mighty [fill-in-the-blank].
See, we’ve all done that at some point this past week, but this is the moment in our gathering where we say “Enough.” Jesus Christ is the Mighty God. And my exhortation is to remember him.
