The Exit from Exodus

We’re four Sundays away from exiting the Book of Exodus.

At Cities Church we believe in (and practice) expository preaching as a pastoral team. This means that we as pastors share the preaching of entire books of the Bible. The opposite of our approach would be if the same guy stood up every Sunday to pontificate — and we want nothing to do with that.

By God’s grace, we preach God’s word (not our opinions) and we preach it as a team (not just one man).

We have typically alternated between the Old and New Testaments, with some short topical series in between. Back in September 2019 we started the Book of Exodus, and now, we have four sermons to go.

And this is a crucial part of the story. Maybe the most crucial.

As we’ll see Sunday, things come to a screeching halt with the golden calf (Exodus 32). The suspense is intense, and I can’t wait to mine together why things went the way they did.

The chapters that follow, Exodus 33–34, mark a mountain-peak section in the Old Testament, one worth our slowing down. We’ll spend three sermons there, God willing, and then wrap up the entire book with the Tabernacle’s construction. It’ll be just in time for an Advent series to bring us into the New Year.

Several themes in the Book of Exodus come together here at the end, with high relevance going back to our series on the Ten Commandments. The people of Israel break the second commandment — remember that one? Since it’s fitting for the sermon this Sunday, I thought a little refresher from that series might help. If you get a minute, go back and check out “Only Worship Yahweh in the Way of Yahweh.”
