Leviticus, Here We Go!
God willing, this Sunday we’ll start a new sermon series: Leviticus.
My hope is to start this new series by understanding the context and purpose of Leviticus within the Bible. I’ll share three reasons why we’re preaching Leviticus, and then I’ll name three major themes in the book. It will be a very introductory kind of sermon — i.e., not normal — but I think necessary as we move from Psalms (one of the most accessible books in the Bible!) to one of the most difficult and foreign books.
The goal for this first sermon is to help ease that transition, but then I also have another goal for this series overall, and that goal is a little bigger:
I pray that we would come to see that the whole story of the Bible is found in this one book.
The Book of Leviticus is kind of like a map key that, if we didn’t have it, the New Testament would not make sense to us. In fact, Leviticus is fundamental to understanding the gospel itself.
And right now, when you read that you might be thinking: “There ain’t no way! It can’t be! I’ve tried to read this book before!” I realize you might think I have to say Leviticus is important because I’m a pastor!
But really, I’m not kidding. The Book of Leviticus is full of gold, and by the time of Advent, eight weeks from now, I hope you’re convinced of that. Oh my. What a gift we have in the Word of God!
